Alsancak is the busiest part of İzmir for walking and going out, and the seafront strip known as the Kordonboyu, the First Kordon, is its spine: cafés, fish restaurants, shops, running and cycling tracks, the sea breeze the city calls the imbat, and the sunset the district's songs and poems are written about. Behind it are Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi and the market, Gündogdu Square and Cumhuriyet Square, Greek houses, churches and synagogues, the Pasaport pier — the first pier on the Kordon — and the Second Kordon.
Alsancak station is a piece of history in its own right: it was the starting point of the first railway, built to bring the crops of the fertile land between İzmir and Aydın to the port of İzmir. Its foundations were laid in 1857 and it entered service in 1858. The district is reached by train from Alsancak station, by İZBAN and by municipal bus, and it is walkable from the Alsancak ferry pier, Konak Square and Cumhuriyet Square.
