The age of the Gümeli yew is disputed. According to examinations carried out in 2016 by Dr Ercan Oktan of the Faculty of Forestry at Karadeniz Technical University and Dr Murat Yıldız of Anturia Consultancy, the tree was claimed to be 4,112 years old. A calculation made by the dendrochronology laboratory of the Department of Forest Botany at the Faculty of Forestry of İstanbul University, using two increment cores taken from the same tree in 2017, put its age at between 1,950 and 2,000 years.
The area where the tree stands was taken within the boundaries of the Gümeli Natural Monument on 14 July, and the Gümeli yew was itself registered as a Monumental Tree on 2 April 2018.
