Much of what came out of Pompeiopolis is not at Pompeiopolis: the finds and mosaics from the excavations are on show at the Kastamonu Archaeology Museum, and some of the architectural pieces from the site are elsewhere in the town of Taşköprü. The ancient settlement itself is a closed mound.
The city was founded by the Romans in 64 BC as the provincial centre of Paphlagonia. The excavation area lies in the centre of Taşköprü, opposite the historic bridge that gives the town its name.
