Guide
The site lies in the village the directorate names as Kayalıkaya, forty kilometres from the centre of Muş and twenty from Varto. It is an Urartian settlement.
It was found in an excavation carried out in 1965 by the British Institute of Archaeology under Seton Lloyd and C. A. Burney. The work brought to light a castle, a temple, a wine cellar, a tomb and smaller finds.
The castle, dated to the reign of the Urartian king Sarduri II, who ruled from 764 to 735 BC, is in sound condition.
In the temple, whose courtyard is paved with stone, there were found a seated bronze lion of the seventh century BC, buttons, arrowheads, bronze pins, and pieces of a belt bearing a lion hunt. The finds are displayed in the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara.
