Objects were first gathered towards a museum in Bursa at the Bursa Boys' High School, where they stayed from 1904 until 1972; in that year they moved into a new building inside the Reşat Oyal Kültürpark. The museum covers the ancient regions of Bithynia and Mysia, with material running from the 3rd millennium BC to the end of the Byzantine period. It holds 25,000 objects, of which around 2,000 are on display in four exhibition halls.
Among the pieces on show are terracotta grave finds of the Yortan culture; figurines, vessels and ornaments from the necropolis of Antandros; a Graeco-Persian funerary stele found in the village of Şükraniye near Karacabey, which the Ministry describes as one of only three examples in the world; Roman stonework; depictions of Zeus and Heracles; statues of Cybele; bronze busts of Athena and Apollo; and ceramic vessels of many forms.
Byzantine silver, bronze and terracotta stand alongside gold, silver and bronze coins of the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, and the garden holds a substantial collection of stelae.
The museum is in the city centre within the Osmangazi district, inside the Kültürpark next to the stadium; the metro runs into the centre and the Kültürpark stop serves it directly.
