The museum occupies the house where Atatürk stayed at Yalova before the Walking Mansion was built. It was restored in 1981 and came into operation as a museum displaying his belongings.
The building, known as the Baltacı Farm Mansion of the General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises, was registered by the Kocaeli board for the protection of cultural property by decision 193 of 20 November 2007. Restoration began in February 2013 to bring it into use as a children's museum, was completed in July 2014, and the museum opened on 30 August 2014.
Unlike the classical Atatürk museums, it is laid out in a modern manner so as to draw the interest of primary school children.
