The Bayburt Dede Korkut City Museum opened in May 2023, after about three years of work, and it was the city's first museum of its kind — the governor said at the opening that Bayburt had until then been a provincial centre without one.
Its subject is the history and cultural heritage of Bayburt, shown through historical objects, traditional crafts, archaeological finds, the natural landscape and digital displays. A section is given to Dede Korkut himself: his place in Turkish culture, why the epic matters, and the different versions in which it has come down.
Part of the collection was brought back from museums in neighbouring provinces, where objects belonging to Bayburt had ended up. The governor was also plain at the opening that the collection is at its beginning rather than its end, and that more material from the city's own life is still to come.
