The caravanserai stands on flat ground thirty-one kilometres south of the centre of Iğdır, west of the village of Kervansaray, at the junction of the roads to the villages now called Güngörmez, Kızılkule, Kervansaray and Asma. It was built in the time of Şerafeddin Ejder, emir of Sürmeli.
The names of the masters who built it are not known. The masons' monograms on the building do show, however, that sixteen different stonecutters worked on it.
The building carries no inscription, and it is not named in the works that deal with caravan roads and hans. That it has no courtyard, and that its portal does not project from the front, suggest a late work. On that reasoning it seems possible to date the caravanserai to the end of the thirteenth century or the beginning of the fourteenth, since most of the hans known to have been built without a courtyard are late and can generally be dated to the fourteenth century.
