The Lajos Kossuth Museum occupies an eighteenth-century Turkish house on Macar Sokak in the Börekçiler quarter of Kütahya, known locally as the Hungarian house.
Lajos Kossuth, one of the leaders of the Hungarian war of independence, who lived from 1802 to 1894, was given refuge in Kütahya between 1850 and 1851 together with his family and a party of fifty-six exiles, and he drew up his draft constitution for Hungary in this house.
The wooden house, of two storeys and seven rooms, stands in a garden. It was restored by the ministry of culture and tourism, arranged as a museum in Kossuth's memory, and opened to visitors on 19 September 1982.
On display are belongings of Kossuth's along with the ethnographic material of a classical Turkish house. The museum is open every day but Monday.
