The mansion that holds Şanlıurfa's museum of the War of Independence was built in 1903, near what is now the old State Hospital, and its interest is partly architectural: it brings European mansion building together with the traditional architecture of the Urfa house, spread over a considerable area and divided in the traditional way into haremlik and selamlık.
Its uses have changed more than once. In the 1940s the People's Theatre gave its performances in the building. It was repaired by the provincial governorship of Şanlıurfa and opened on 11 April 2009 under the name Şanlıurfa Kurtuluş Müzesi, the museum of the city's liberation; the inventory records it as the Mahmut Nedim Konağı Private War of Independence Museum.
Part of the mansion is not museum at all. One section has been allotted to the State Turkish Folk Music Chorus, and one of the halls has been arranged as a music museum for Müslüm Gürses. The provincial account does not describe what is displayed in the museum rooms themselves.
