One thing before setting out: the Mucur underground city is temporarily closed to visitors. It lies in the Mucur district of Kırşehir, cut into soft rock seven to eight metres below ground, and it is thought to extend as far as the neighbourhood of the Aşık Paşa tomb. With the rooms, halls and corridors cleared so far it has the appearance of an extensive underground city.
It has a great many rooms, linked by passages wide enough for a person to move through bent over. There are stables sized mainly for sheep and goats, places for worship, the large circular stone blocks thought to have been made for closing off the passages and shutting the rooms, and ventilation shafts opening to the surface.
