When the Black Sea motorway opened, the strip of coast between Kumbaşı and Fatsa was left aside — and Perşembe, the only district along it, became a stretch for people who want landscape and history rather than speed. There are a great many hidden beaches in and around the town, along with Hoynat island, the Yasonburnu peninsula and its church, the tombs, the mosques and the harbour.
Perşembe holds the Cittaslow title. The name joins the Italian citta and the English slow, and the network grew out of the Slow Food movement to keep globalisation from standardising the fabric of towns, their people and their way of living, and from wiping out what is local. It is a union of towns and cities that do not want to become one of the homogeneous places globalisation produces, and that want a place in the world while keeping their own identity — Perşembe among them. What draws visitors here in practice is plainer: fresh fish, and the people.
