Satala was a garrison town, founded to guard the Euphrates frontier, and its remains lie at Sadak village on the eastern slopes of the Mese Ici mountains, southeast of Kelkit in Gümüşhane province. Visitors should know what to expect: finds of the Roman period are almost nonexistent on the surface, and what can be seen amounts to a few grave stelae, a bath, an aqueduct and the line of the fortification walls. Most of the ancient town lies beneath the modern village.
The settlement formed an irregular rectangle, ringed by walls that run some 200 metres to the east and 400 to the north; much of that circuit is now under present-day houses. About a mile south of the village stand the aqueduct arches. They are said to have numbered forty-seven; four remain. The site is 28 kilometres from Kelkit and 99 from Gümüşhane, reached by turning left off the main Erzincan route and continuing about ten kilometres.
