Kov Castle is built on a rock 130 metres high, laid out on an east–west axis, and measures seventy metres along its length. The base of the castle stands 1,630 metres above sea level.
The inner walls are ninety centimetres thick and the outer walls, built of rough local stone, 150 centimetres. Regularly dressed stone is used for the stones at the corners of the walls, and rubble stone in the southern front of the inner castle. The faces of both the outer and the inner castle were consolidated with lime and sand, and the curtain walls are supported by angular, triangular and round towers.
The castle is thought to have been built in 1361 by Alexios III, emperor of Trebizond, to hold off raids coming from the Bayburt region.
