The tomb of Mehmed V Reşad stands in a garden between Boyacı Sokak and the Golden Horn, behind the single-storey house of the tomb keeper. Its door faces the water, and that was the way in: visitors arrived by boat at the granite quay in front of it.
That approach is gone. When the piled road along the shore was built in 1986 the quay and the little iron landing posts were buried under the fill, so the tomb is now reached from the street side.
The building is octagonal, entirely of cut stone and marble, with two windows above and one below on each face and a lead-covered dome ringed by a marble moulding. Ten marble steps lead up to a door framed in pink and white marble, with a Quranic verse across it and the calligrapher's signature on the work; small domed Quran rooms flank the entrance and a marble gallery runs round the building.
