Uzungöl lies 99 kilometres from Trabzon and nineteen from Çaykara, at 1,090 metres, held between steep slopes and heavy forest. The lake at the centre of the valley was formed when rocks falling from those slopes blocked the Haldizen stream; it gave its name to the whole area. The old wooden houses of nearby Serah village, built in the manner of the region, complete the setting.
There is more to do here than look at the lake. Walking tours, birdwatching and botanical tours are organised in the area, and from Uzungöl you can go on to the lakes among the higher mountains or to the other pastures nearby — Sekersu, Demirkapı and Yaylaonu. The mountains around hold bear, wolf, wild goat, fox and Caucasian black grouse.
