The Deveboynu peninsula reaches into Lake Van across the boundary between the Gevaş district of Van and the Tatvan district of Bitlis, and a presidential decision announced at the end of August 2026 made it the country's fifty-fourth national park. The minister of agriculture and forestry described the area as holding turquoise coves, country left largely alone, rich wildlife and a heritage a thousand years old, and said the designation was intended to bring out those values and to increase the region's potential for ecotourism.
