The Almus dam was built where the Yeşilırmak makes a slight bend and enters the gorge of the Omala plain, as a zoned earth-fill dam. Forest covers the ground around it and the shore is cut by a great many inlets.
The lake is now valued as a place for raising trout as well, and the provincial directorate describes it as an ideal course for water sports. Buses run to Almus from the Tokat bus station.
