The church of the Archangel Michael, also called the Aya Elenia church, stands in the Sille quarter of Konya. It was built in the year 327 by Helena, mother of the Byzantine emperor Constantine, and is known as one of the first churches in Anatolia.
It stands in a quarter that has held many civilisations across five thousand years, carrying traces of the Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian Seljuk, Karamanid and Ottoman periods.
Inside the church is a repair inscription written in Turkish in Greek letters, dated 1833, which gives information about the history of the building.
The historic Christian congregation of the church came to an end with the killings of Greeks and the population exchange.
