Aya Varvara stands close to the Sümela monastery. Its date of founding is not known; from its architecture and decoration it is dated to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
It is thought to have been connected with Sümela, and it has also been suggested that it may have been Sümela's burial ground. The source calls it a church in one line and a monastery in another. It is small: a church enclosed by a protective wall, together with various spaces whose foundations are what can be seen today. It is on the Maçka road.
