Büyük Akgöl is a freshwater lake dammed by alluvium, formed by the silt the Sakarya river laid down.
It covers nineteen square kilometres, though much of that is reed bed and marsh. Its deepest point is six metres, and the water stands at most four metres high.
Fish taken from it include crayfish, perch, catfish, rudd, pike, tench, bream, mirror carp and silver crucian carp.
Because this is a wetland there is a tower for watching birds. Around the lake, besides the villages and neighbourhoods, there are private restaurants where you can shop and eat.
There are good spots for a picnic, but no lavatories, seating or drinking water. The road is asphalt and the lake can be reached in any season.
