The Çapanoğlu Mosque was built in the centre of Yozgat in 1779 by Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey, governor of the Ottoman sanjak of Bozok. It is known locally as the Büyük Cami or the Ulu Cami, and the market of Yozgat is laid out around it.
Built of cut stone, the mosque has two parts, an inner and an outer mosque. The inner mosque is rectangular in plan and covered by a dome 15.15 metres across. The outer mosque was added in 1794 by Süleyman Bey, brother of Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey. The mosque had two doors when first built, and a third was added in 1964. It has a minaret with a single balcony.
On the east front stands a square tomb holding eighteen cenotaphs of the Çapanoğlu family and of the notables of Yozgat.
