The Eski Beyazıt Mosque stands beside Doğubayazıt castle and was built in the reign of Selim I, which makes it one of the earliest Ottoman mosques in the east of the country.
It is rectangular in plan with a central dome and a single minaret, built of cut stone. What it offers is a combination: the classical elements of Ottoman architecture together with the stonework particular to eastern Anatolia. Plainness runs through the whole building — the entrance door, the walls, the mihrab, the porch, the wall piers, the transitions to the dome, the wall arches, the windows and the minaret are all restrained. The mosque held an important place in the religious, cultural and social life of the Muslim community here for centuries.
