This mosque inside the castle at Amasra was built in the ninth century as a Byzantine church, and it was converted into a mosque in 1460, during the conquest of Amasra by Mehmed II. It carries all the building features of its period; the narthex and the apse projection were taken into the space later.
In 1887 the barrel-vaulted roof over the space was in danger of collapse and was removed, and the building went through a major repair in which a wooden ceiling and roof were put in its place. One custom is still kept here: at every Friday and festival prayer the sermon is read with a sword drawn.
