The Great Mosque is the oldest Islamic building at Hasankeyf. It was built in 1325 by the Ayyubids on the remains of a church and is the largest of the mosques in the castle area. The Ministry reads the decision not to demolish the church remains but to build the mosque over them as a sign of the respect of Islam for other places of worship.
Besides its inscription, the mosque has plaster decoration in its interior and a mihrab worked in carved stone. Beneath the courtyard is a cistern with a capacity of thousands of tonnes, and the outer section used for prayer in summer has also come down to the present.
