The zawiya is a cluster of buildings gathered around the tomb of Imam Abdullah, held locally to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, which is why the site carries the respect it does.
It was first raised in the twelfth century, under the Artuqids. The building is thought to have collapsed and to have been rebuilt in the time of the Ayyubid ruler Taqi al-Din Abdullah, between 1249 and 1294.
A later repair is recorded on the building itself: the inscription over the entrance dates a renovation to the Aq Qoyunlu period, in the year 878 of the Hijri calendar, which is 1478.
