Guide

Between Two Seas is a 60-kilometre walk across the western edge of İstanbul, from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It is divided into four stages of 15 kilometres each, which can be walked over four consecutive days or on separate occasions, and it works inward from the city's outer fringe towards its centre, through farmland, forest and water catchments.

The idea is to see, on foot, how hard İstanbul is being reshaped. Along the way the route passes lignite mines, the airport zone, the approach road to the third Bosphorus bridge, excavation dumps, industrial estates and housing, as well as Yarımburgaz Cave, counted as the oldest settlement in İstanbul, and the vegetable gardens that survive inside the city. The walk was conceived by Serkan Taycan and supported by the 13th İstanbul Biennial.
