The high ground of the Amanos mountains in Osmaniye counts among the important bird areas of Türkiye. Migrating birds use these heights as a route, and white stork, honey buzzard, black kite, buzzard and lesser spotted eagle can all be seen along it.
The Kırmıtlı bird sanctuary has important bird area status in its own right for the species it holds, among them night heron and three kinds of kingfisher — the common, the pied and the white-throated. Having all three kingfishers together is unusual, and it is one of the reasons birdwatchers come. Two hundred and fifty bird species have been recorded at Kırmıtlı to date. It is about eleven kilometres from the city centre, reached by road.
