The Kocaeli Science Centre was created as a joint project of the metropolitan municipality and TÜBİTAK, and the building it occupies has its own history: 8,500 square metres within the Seka paper mill, whose foundations were laid in 1934 and which produced paper for seventy years. The mill was restored and opened to visitors as the Kocaeli Science Centre and the Seka Paper Museum, so the two can be seen together.
The science centre holds about 250 experiment installations along with specially designed galleries, workshops where scientific work is carried out, a science stage for demonstrations and talks, exhibition areas, a library, research offices and a science cafe. It is on Mehmet Ali Kagitci Sokak in the Kozluk quarter of İzmit.
