Sebaste lies about two kilometres southwest of Sivaslı in Uşak province, at Selcikler village. It was founded by the emperor Augustus in 20 BC and given his name in its Greek form, and in the Roman period it was one of the twelve significant cities of the region.
Its best years came later, under the Byzantines: by the ninth century AD it had become the bishopric for the towns around it, and two churches, one large and one small, stand in the city.
