What the list holds is unusual even by this country's standards — three Urartian fortresses within reach of one city. Van Kalesi sits above the old town, Çavuştepe and Hoşap lie to the south-east along the road toward Hakkâri, and the museum in the city keeps what has been taken out of them.
The other half is Armenian, with the Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar, an island reached by boat.
