The Aydın Archaeological Museum stands in the Ilıcabaşı quarter of the city centre, on fifteen thousand square metres of land allotted to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Building began in 2000 but could not be finished for want of funds. The work was taken into the ministry's investment plan in 2011, money was found, the contract was let on 23 May 2011 and the museum opened on 17 August 2012.
The museum has a basement, a ground floor and a first floor. The basement holds the stores, laboratories, a refectory, the archive and the plant rooms. On the ground floor are the entrance hall, a display hall of 1,340 square metres, an information room, a goods lift for moving works to the stores and a passenger lift so that disabled visitors can go round the museum comfortably; the part to the left of the entrance holds the administrative rooms. On the first floor are a hall of 530 square metres for temporary exhibitions, a children's workshop and a multi-purpose hall for 130 people.
The buildings cover 7,072 square metres, with landscaping over a further 12,500. The museum building is of reinforced concrete frame construction.
The archaeological works displayed here are of stone, glass and terracotta, along with coins and mosaic flooring.
