One of the terraced houses that give the Akaretler quarter of Beşiktaş its name is open as a museum, because Mustafa Kemal's family lived in it for a time. When Zübeyde Hanım left Salonica for İstanbul during the First World War, her son rented number 76 — today number 36 — for her, and he stayed here himself in the periods when he came back from the front.
That makes the house one of the places where the plans for the liberation were worked out, of a kind with room 101 at the Pera Palas and Atatürk's house in Şişli. The directorate general of foundations later arranged it as a museum, which opened in 2010. Entry is free; it is closed at weekends.
