Başdağ is the rise on Karadağ that faces the town of Kılbasan, and it carries more than a castle: there are military buildings and a pool up here as well. The castle itself sits on the northern summit, and its towers are round and octagonal in plan. Inside are traces of structures thought to have been soldiers' quarters, and more military remains stand on the flat ground between Başdağ's two peaks. The buildings were in use in both the Roman and the Byzantine periods.
