The Bayır cypress shares a courtyard in the Bayır neighbourhood of Marmaris with the Bayır mosque, the Çınaraltı coffee house and a second natural monument, the Bayır plane. Both trees were declared natural monuments on the same day, 21 February 1995, and the protected ground around them is 0.15 hectares.
The cypress stands 32 metres tall and measures two metres in diameter. Its age is not known, and the reason is recorded: the inside of the trunk has decayed to a hollow over much of its length, so no reliable count could be taken. Where its neighbour has an estimated age, this tree has none.
Stated capacity for the site is 50 visitors, and it is open from 08:00 to 21:00. The Camiyanı locality where it stands is the ordinary centre of village life rather than an enclosure, so seeing the tree means sitting in the courtyard among the shops and houses around it.
Public transport lines 10-13 and 10-5 run to Bayır from Marmaris bus station.
