Dokuz Eylül University opened the Bayrakbilim and Turkish Flags Museum on 9 September 2020 — a date chosen for the liberation of İzmir — and describes it as the first national flag museum in Türkiye. It occupies the Eylül Köşk on the Dokuzcesmeler campus.
Four halls hold the flags and emblems of the Turkish states of the past and of world civilisations. Alongside them are an archive section, set up to record and preserve the material, and a children's workshop; a small library sits inside the museum as well. The university states that the archive will later be opened to researchers and enthusiasts worldwide as an open archive.
The permanent exhibition to look for is 'The History of the Star and Crescent', built from the collection of the lawyer and collector Haluk Perk: Turkish flags, objects bearing the star and crescent, and a large number of documents. A separate thematic exhibition hall is kept for academics, collectors and researchers working on the subject, so what is on show beyond the permanent display changes.
