Boyabat castle was raised on one of two steep facing crags in the Gökırmak valley, and it was built to follow the natural shape of the rock rather than to override it. Some of the towers set between the curtain walls are rectangular, others round, with stairs inside leading up to them. You enter at the south-east corner, through a small door beside the large round tower.
Finds of the late Roman and early Byzantine periods are shown here, but in its present form the walls, towers and building material are plainly those of an Ottoman castle — which is to say the site was in use from late Roman times through to the Ottoman period.
