The museum is on the ground floor of the library and documentation building of Gaziantep University, created to introduce students to the culture of the city where they study. It opened on 25 December 2009 and operates for the university's own students.
The archaeology of Gaziantep is presented chronologically, through original cultural material and documents. The cultural life of the city is taken section by section: the significant people it produced, the Antep dialect and its features, important events in the city's life, family life and daily life and special days, children's games and toys, entertainment, photography, and Karagöz shadow puppetry.
The thinking behind the display is to set out the culture of Gaziantep, to remind those who live here of their past and to introduce the city to visitors from outside. The collections show tangible cultural material — ways of living, handicrafts, house crafts and everyday life — from the twelfth century, when the city emerged, to the present. Fossils collected in and around Gaziantep and donated to the museum form an important part of the holdings.
There is also a laboratory and workshop section, which gives archaeology students a practical setting for their museology classes.
