The oak at Karacaözü is under protection, and the provincial directorate states that it is 550 years old and counted among the oldest oaks in the world. The village is in the Yapraklı district, 27 kilometres from the centre of Çankiri.
It is not the only registered monumental tree in the province: a plane tree at Müflis Tepesi in the central district, the Pasasultan in the Orta district, the Türbe and Gedene pines and the Kaba Mese at Eldivan, the Dokuzkardeşler pines at Çerkes and a great pine at Ilgaz all carry the same status.
