The Kuvayı Milliye Museum in Balıkesir is in the building used as headquarters during the War of Independence, which afterwards served as the town hall between 1947 and 1988. A museum directorate was established in 1987, renovation was pushed forward, and once the collecting was finished the building opened as the Balıkesir Kuvayı Milliye Museum on 6 September 1996.
The two floors do quite different things. The ground floor is about the local resistance: the written decisions taken by the 41 people who led the founding of the Kuvayı Milliye in Balıkesir, the resolutions of the congress, the personal belongings and photographs of those men, and wax figures of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his wife Latife Hanım. The upper floor holds the archaeological and ethnographic material found in the province, in display halls named after the ancient cities of Kyzikos, Adramytteion, Daskyleion and Antandros, where the finds from the excavations and surveys at each are shown in chronological order. The museum is on Anafartalar Caddesi in the Hisarici quarter.
