Sebaste lies two kilometres southwest of Sivaslı, 35 kilometres from the centre of Uşak. The emperor Augustus founded it in 20 BC and it carried his Greek title as its name — Sebaste, the revered — and the provincial directorate counts it among the twelve significant cities of the Roman period. In the ninth century AD it became the episcopal seat for the towns around it.

Its greatest years came under Byzantium, and two churches survive from that time, one large and one small. Expropriation of the land is still in progress; the ministry's excavation has not yet begun, so what you see here is an unexcavated site.
