Straight-line distance misleads badly in Rize. The valleys run north to south and do not connect to one another across the ridges, so moving between two places in neighbouring valleys means going down to the coast and back up. However this list is ordered, read it valley by valley.
Zil Kale, in the Fırtına valley, is the castle most visitors come for. Kale-i Bala and the Tunca valley nature park are in the east, the Gürcüdüzü plateau at Fındıklı, the Pileki cave at İyidere and the Anzer plateau inland at İkizdere.
