The Arasta is a shopping street for glass, tile and ceramics in Odunpazarı, and it is worth knowing that it is new: Odunpazarı municipality created it in 2012 by demolishing a group of buildings inside the urban conservation area and rebuilding them.
The point of it was glass. Odunpazarı and Eskişehir have been working to make glass a signature of the city, and most of the fourteen shops here are run by people who took certified courses in it; alongside the glass, work by tile and ceramic artists is on sale.
It was built to give an alternative to the existing shopping in the conservation area and so to speed up the physical recovery of the quarter, and it has become a meeting point rather than only a market: the square is ringed by a boutique hotel and a Crimean Tatar cultural centre and ciborek house, and the open space is used as an open-air multi-purpose hall for cultural events.
