The monument stands at the crossroads where Kışla Caddesi meets Tandoğan Caddesi in Malatya. Work began in 1945; it was finished and unveiled in 1947, and was made by the sculptor Hakkı Atamulu.
It combines a stone pedestal with bronze figures: Atatürk and a young athlete. Atatürk is the taller of the two, bare-headed and in military dress with his cloak behind him, his left foot forward and his face turned towards the young man, the index finger of his right hand pointing ahead; the young man holds the Turkish flag.
