Malatya Museum is an archaeological and ethnographic museum on Kernek Meydanı. A smaller museum was founded in 1971, and the present building came into service in 1979.
Work on the museum building started in 1975 and was finished in 1977. From 1978 the collection grew with finds from rescue excavations at settlements that were going to be flooded by the Karakaya dam reservoir. The displays set up at the opening were later replaced by a more modern arrangement, put in place from 2001.
Most of the works held here came out of excavations at Arslantepe, Pirot, Cafer Höyük, Köşkerbaba, İmamoğlu and Değirmentepe. There are also objects found during the construction of the Karakaya dam.
The collection covers the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages and the Hittite, Urartian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Anatolian principalities and Ottoman periods.

- Across Malatya as a whole, monthly mean temperatures run from -0.2 °C in January to 27.2 °C in August; the mean stays between 15 and 25 °C in May, June, September and October; rainfall is heaviest in April (55 mm) and lightest in August (4 mm). Long-term means for 1929-2025 from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM).
