The museum's building stands inside the inner citadel, which is itself part of the historic fabric of the town. Cizre is one of the significant settlements of Mesopotamia, and the region's past runs in layers through the Assyrian, Babylonian, Roman and Islamic civilisations to the Ottoman period. The collection is to consist of archaeological finds, ethnographic works and objects of local life.
