Dipsiz Göl in the Doğanşar district of Sivas takes its name — the bottomless lake — from the fact that its floor cannot be seen from the surface. What produces that effect is the vegetation: water plants three to four metres long rise from the bottom towards the surface and form what looks like a dense underwater forest. The sides of the lake slope down to the bottom like a crater, and as you go deeper the light falls off, so that at seven metres the water is dim.
The deepest point is ten metres. The water wells up from the bottom and is slightly cloudy; it then goes underground again, passes beneath the Doğanşar road, and forms the Dipsiz Göl waterfall. The lake is used by walkers, by people who come to photograph it, by divers, and by anyone wanting a day outdoors. Doğanşar is 98 kilometres from Sivas, reached by the Sivas-Erzincan road.
