Elbistan lies 130 kilometres from Kahramanmaraş and is one of the districts of the province that matter most in historical and cultural terms.
Kahramanmaraş itself stands at the meeting of the caravan roads that in antiquity joined Syria and Mesopotamia to Cappadocia and to other parts of Anatolia, and it has carried down to the present the cultural wealth of the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Persians, the Macedonians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Dulkadirids and the Ottomans.
Within the bounds of Elbistan are the mounds of Karahöyük and Ceyhanhöyük, the Keçe cave, the protected sites of Kurucaova and the Great Mosque, among other cultural remains. The complex of the Companions of the Cave at Afşin lies thirty-three kilometres away.
To display the historic works found in and around Elbistan where they belong, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism restored the old government building and drew up a project for it as the Elbistan City Museum. Restoration of the building, the selection of works and the arrangement of the displays began in 2016, were finished in 2020, and the museum opened in June 2021.
The museum holds seventeen display halls covering the historical and cultural inheritance of Elbistan and the country around it.
