What draws the eye at Fethiye Mosque, in the middle of Kars, is that the two minarets do not match the building under them. The shell is Baltic in style, a long rectangle running east to west — because the minarets were added in 1985, when the building was converted for worship, and the building itself is a church.
It was raised at the end of the nineteenth century, in the years when Kars was under Russian occupation. Between the church and the mosque came an unlikely third use: from 1953 to 1970 the hall served the town as an indoor sports centre.
It stands in the town centre, so it can be reached on foot or by car.
