Kars is a frontier city, and its provincial culture and tourism directorate sums up the reasons to come in a single list: climb Kars Castle to look out over the town, walk around Ani, eat the local goose, kaşar cheese and honey, ski at Sarıkamış, and cross frozen Lake Çıldır on a horse-drawn sledge. Ani, a medieval city on the west bank of the Arpaçay at the Armenian border, 42 km from the centre, has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since July 2016. Inside its 4.5 km of outer walls are the cathedral that became the Fethiye Mosque, the Tigran Honents church with its frescoes, a Seljuk palace, caravanserai and baths, and the Ebul Menuçehr Mosque, which the directorate calls the first Turkish mosque in Anatolia.
